Hot Weather = Hot Paws

I know as dog lovers that most of this is common sense, but just a little reminder that our furry friends experience hot weather just as we do, but in a fur coat. They rely on us to keep them cool and safe, so with that in mind, here are a few tips to make sure you don’t end up with too-hot hounds.

Make it stand out

  1. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the eveningwhen temperatures are cooler. Avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. Test the pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog's paws.

  2. Always have fresh, cool water available for your dog to drink. Ensure there’s ample shade if your dog is outside. Portable shade options like umbrellas or tarps can be useful if natural shade is limited.

  3. Keep outdoor time short and bring your dog inside frequently to cool down, especially during peak heat hours.

Avoid strenuous activities such as running or intense play during hot weather.

  4. Regular grooming is essential to prevent matting, which can trap heat - but don’t shave your dog’s coat as it can provide protection against the sun. Trim long hair and brush regularly to help your dog stay cool.

  5. Use cooling vests, bandanas, or mats to help your dog stay cool. These can be particularly effective during walks or outdoor activities. Provide a kiddie pool for your dog to splash around in, or gently spray them with water to help them cool off.
