Walks in the North: Hirst Wood

A gorgeous, fairly flat, open space close to Shipley and Saltaire, this makes a great walk on hot days when shade is needed.

Hirst Wood, located near Saltaire in West Yorkshire, is a popular spot for dog walking, and pretty much on my doorstep. It’s actually great in all weathers but particularly on hot days it provides shade and lovely dappled light. I actually do quite a few of my human photoshoots in this location!

The area is well-frequented by dog walkers, families, and nature enthusiasts, creating a friendly and safe environment. The community feel adds to the overall experience, making it a pleasant place to visit regularly. I always feel safe here, even when walking the dogs alone. Higher Ground cafe is a welcome pit stop too, and there is a nature reserve close by as well as the canal path and the River Aire. The paths are wide and it is absolutely gorgeous in autumn too.

The Hirst Wood Car Park is pretty big and you can usually find a space, although it does get busy on a weekend as local sports teams play on the adjacent fields. Parking can be seen where the black dot is here. It is directly next to the Hirst Lock entrance to the woods.
