A Walk at…Chellow Dene, West Yorkshire
Chellow Dene is a picturesque woodland and nature area located in Bradford, West Yorkshire. It’s known for its tranquil beauty, and the circular walk around its reservoir. It’s super dog friendly and a beautiful walk at this time of year 🍂
The reservoirs at Chellow Dene were originally built in the mid-19th century to provide water to the growing population of Bradford during the industrial era, and like much of Bradford’s past, they’ve been preserved to be enjoyed today. It’s a straightforward circular walk, and great (if a bit muddy) terrain for dogs as its a mix of woodland, paths, streams, and the reservoirs themselves.
It’s really easy to get to and has a decent, if small, car park (although I’ve never seen it very busy). If you follow the sat nav it can take you to a residential area that has some sort of access via the housing estate, so instead make sure you use the post code BD15 9LL to take you to the main entrance off Haworth Road (B6144). As a woman walking alone I did feel safe, although as always in an area like this that is quite enclosed and bordered by steep terrain, I didn’t wear my headphones so I was aware of my surroundings at all times. It was a bright day and I came across other people occasionally, all of whom were polite and friendly, and had good control of their dogs.
My Peggy absolutely loves it here as there is so much to sniff and to explore for dogs - from paddling in the streams (and a massive muddy puddle which the little monkey went and laid down in) to racing up and down the steep woodland chasing squirrels, she tires herself out effortlessly. Ringo is less adventurous and likes to stick to the path a bit more to make sure I’m still following 🥰
I walked around in a circular until I reached the stepping stones on the return path, where I crossed over and retraced my steps back to the car park for the last bit of the walk. I’d say its probably about two miles all in all. And while the footpaths are clear and fairly wide, I’m not sure I’d attempt to bring a buggy, so it might not be the best destination if you have a baby and a dog!
When you’ve finished your walk, if you’re ready for a cuppa, cake or sandwich I can recommend the nearby Robertshaws Farm Shop & Cafe (lush), or nearby Saltaire Village, both of which have fantastic options.
All in all I’d give this place a solid 9 out of 10 for dog friendliness. Let me know in the comments if you go! 🐾
