Walks in the North: Along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal from Saltaire to Bingley

It’s a popular spot for dog walkers, cyclists and runners, and with good reason - this stretch of canal from Saltaire to Bingley offers up beautiful scenery and a good pub on route.

This route is an easy go-to walk where dogs can roam freely off-lead (but watch out for cyclists!). We start at Robert’s Park, Saltaire, follow the river path in the opposite direction to Leeds, past the Wharf and Bradford Rowing Club and cross the bridge onto the canal further up. It’s really lovely on this stretch of river and it’s fairly even. Most days Herons can be seen, as well as the occasional Kingfisher.

Once you’ve crossed over from the river path, as you carry on up the canal you will get to Three Rise Locks - younger sibling of Bingley’s infamous Five Rise Locks. Once past here you’re just a short stride away from a cold one at the Fisherman’s Pub. Our dogs actually go straight in here when we arrive because they know that’s exactly where we are headed 🤣

Coming back we follow the canal and cross back over into the field next to Robert’s Park at Saltaire, although you can follow the canal path right back to Salts Mill (which houses much of David Hockney’s work and is well worth a visit if you have time). Salt’s Mill have a bit of a bizarre dog policy though; your dog can only go in if it’s small enough to be picked up and carried!
